I owe my Dad a lot, for showing me how to be a man but also introducing me to cycling. The day he gave me one of his old cycling jerseys and said I should ask my mum to adjust it so it fit me will be a memory I will always treasure. Even to the very early days of taking me out on rides, taking me on 10 or 20 mile rides going as fast as I could, which I may add was extremely slow but at 10 years old you think is incredibly fast. He never complained once about waiting for me or giving me a push up hills to get me home, he saw how much I enjoyed the challenge and how much I loved this sport.
His style of riding was also something I admired, having raced from his early years pedalling a bike wasn't something new to him, it did in fact appear effortless. His style on the bike was similar to that of Armstrong, incredibly strong on all terrain but having the explosive power to jump away. He was and still is an incredibly smart cyclist, knowing the correct time to attack but also being able to read a cyclist and find their weaknesses. His style of riding is something I still look to even today, the ability to be aggressive throughout the length of a race and know your capabilities and push past them is the ultimate goal.
Without my Dad introducing me to cycling I don't know where I would be today, cycling has become a way for me to escape and find peace, but it also has become a journey of pure enjoyment and happiness.
To you Dad I say thank you, I'll let you have the next town sign sprint!
Until next time, Ciao!!!
